EYFS

Learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

Learning begins in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which includes Nursery and Reception. Our EYFS curriculum provides the essential building blocks that help children flourish as young learners, preparing them confidently for Year One and beyond.

The EYFS curriculum is structured around seven areas of learning, all of which are interconnected and equally important. Within these, three prime areas are particularly crucial for sparking children’s curiosity, enthusiasm for learning, and their ability to form relationships and thrive. The four specific areas build upon these prime areas, allowing children to apply and extend their skills and knowledge.

Prime Areas of Learning

  • Communication and Language (CL): Children are encouraged to experience a rich language environment, developing confidence and skills in expressing themselves. They are supported to speak and listen in a variety of situations.

  • Physical Development (PD): Children have opportunities to be active, developing their coordination, control, and movement. They also learn the importance of physical activity and making healthy choices related to food.

  • Personal, Social, and Emotional Development (PSED): Children are supported in developing a positive sense of themselves and others. They learn to form relationships, respect others, manage feelings, understand appropriate behaviour in groups, and gain confidence in their abilities.

Specific Areas of Learning

  • Literacy (Lit): Children are encouraged to link sounds and letters, begin reading and writing, and explore a wide range of reading materials—including books, poems, and other texts—to foster a love of reading.

  • Mathematics (Maths): Children develop skills in counting, understanding numbers, solving simple addition and subtraction problems, and describing shapes, spaces, and measures.

  • Understanding the World (UW): Children are guided to explore and make sense of their physical world and community, discovering people, places, technology, and the environment through observation and investigation.

  • Expressive Arts and Design (EAD): Children explore and experiment with a wide variety of materials and media. They are encouraged to share their ideas and emotions through activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play, and design and technology.

For children whose home language is not English, staff value and support the use of their home language while ensuring children have ample opportunities to develop a strong foundation in English.

All areas of learning are delivered through planned, purposeful activities that encourage curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning.
